This Saturday at Volonte Park in Anderson, CA we were blessed to serve some of the most fun and passionate people of our city. Families came from all over the South County to participate in our event.

We had a bit of a scare that morning as the rain came down. Our hopes weren't daunted! We hid those eggs and found favor with our Father as he parted the clouds and shone on our egg hunt. This blogger's favorite part was the group prayer that Darby led from the announcers box at the ballpark.

3000 plastic eggs are filled with candy waiting to be hidden and then discovered by the awesome children of Anderson and South Shasta County-ans (yes, we make up words to describe awesome people). Hey everyone, thanks for stopping by our blog. We are currently meeting on Sundays at either the Titus home or the Anderson home to pray and do some planning for our upcoming events and gatherings. We will be holding MONTHLY "Preview Gatherings" at City Hall starting on Easter Sunday and continuing through the summer. The intent of the previews is to give people a glimpse of who we are and what we are about, and to invite them to join us in planting a regular weekly service beginning sometime in the fall. Why Do I love The Way?

Prior to attending The Way, I was in love with my church. I loved the rock music; I loved the ambiance; I loved the pastor; I loved. I still love that church. I do.

It was at that church I was introduced to God’s present working within me. His persistent desire for me to be all the things that He knows me to be, but which I am too afraid to see or become. It was there that the seed for MORE began to germinate. It started to thirst and to hunger, and of course, my own flesh and desire couldn't satisfy. While I could feel God moving me, guiding me, jesturing me toward His river, I continued to sit...

Another thing I loved about that church: my ability to blend into the dark room, sit in the back, and slip out without talking to a soul. Slip in, slip out… not quite like The Clapper, but just as easy.

You know what I “love” about The Way?

Darby noticed that I was still making coffee in the kitchen and asked when I’d be ready. He was waiting to start until I sat down. I had no idea.

Now, considering how much I loved my anonymity in church #1, one would think that I would loathe this aspect. And, to be honest, when it happened I was kind of shocked, “why are you waiting on ME?” I’m not used to that, I’m used to the ol’ slip in late and sit in the back by the door. It worked throughout college…

But today Darby asked me to explain to a gal what makes The Way different from the big conglomeration churches that are so well known and popular. What is it about The Way that attracted me?

Little did he know how much I loved my other church.

Little does he know HOW MUCH MORE I love The Way.

And so this blog, is to describe to you WHAT, in my opinion, makes The Way different. If you have ever attended one of our gatherings, music nights, or service projects, your thoughts and reflections of The Way are very much WELCOME in our comment section.

Here is a list (continually in progress) of what I find so dear about this group of people:

• Their hearts for ministry, and their love for mission.

• Their genuineness. When they ask, “How are you?” they really mean it. They will even start out by remembering the way you answered last time. “Last week you weren’t feeling so hot, you look like you’re feeling better today. How’s it going?”

• They engage you in conversation.

• They respect your opinion; and if opinions differ there is freedom of discussion, and freedom to respectfully disagree without animosity (or an inherent need to prove rightness).

• They love you WHERE you are on your journey.

• They desire to meet people where they are, regardless of what that looks like.

• They are supportive, and they band together when one of us is in need.

• They are humble, and they walk their talk.

• I enjoy learning from Darby and from the rest of the group; and I love how they actively work to reflect God's word in the community. I truly believe THIS factor HERE is the primary idea of what makes The Way so special to me.

*And really, these people are just all around FABULOUS. I am so grateful and honored to know them and walk along with them. I like them!

God is Listening

I feel that it is important to share testimony when God is working and moving in our individual lives.

Sometimes, it is so reassuring that God really is listening despite all the pressing issues of war, famine, pollution, politics, psychosis, and murder; much less, blasphemy, coveting, and dishonoring the way we were parented.

Sometimes it feels arrogant when I pray for guidance about little things, like purchasing a car.

But then I remember the various teachings about God being in all the large and small acts in our lives - clothing the flowers and feeding the birds. And yet, flowers and birds still can seem more significant than my personal day-to-day decisions.

In my effort to eschew pride, I also turn my face from the knowledge that I am loved, valued, and listened to by my Heavenly Father.

The past couple days I have been able to witness His ever-presence in my life.

For the past year I have been longing to replace my car of 10 years (the only car my son ever remembers us owning). But after being unemployed for a year, and getting a job making 2/3 the wage, the idea of replacing the ol' beast wasn't really an option. I asked God, "Lord, please help me. Either please let my car stop breaking down all the time, or provide me with a way."

Time passed, and I just continue to trust. I forgot that prayer.

Then a fella I know got his dream sports car, and posted that he was selling his SUV. I looked at my finances and could squeeze to come up with all but $1,000. So I asked if he would let me pay installments on the difference, and he said YES.

We scheduled to look at it the next day.

I prayed that night. "Lord, I'm excited and afraid and I need your guidance. An SUV will cost more in gas and insurance. I'm on such a tight budget Lord, and I can't lose that control. But God, I want this car SO BAD. So, so, SO BAD! I need your help and guidance, I need you to tell me what to do here. I need you to tell me several times because both my desire and fear are so intense that I fear I'll ignore you if you just say it once."

I prayed this while driving.

To be forthright, I have always felt in my heart that I'm mildly insulting God when I pray while driving.

Jesus stopped everything, knelt in the woods, and devoted all attention to God during prayer. I'm checking my mirrors, my speed limit, eyeballing the cars around me, and also talking to God. But at this particular time, I hoped that my previous belief was just me having overly high expectations of what I am expected in prayer. I was so overcome with emotion while driving that I just HAD to talk to God. No one could appease me but Him. I didn't want the wise counsel of a friend or family member. My yearn was to Him.

The next day, during my lunch break, I went home to find the 2009 tax return check I had stashed away (I filed late and received the check about two months go. I never opened the envelope, life was too busy for another trip to the bank).

The check was $1,100 MORE than what I had remembered my tax return stating. That is $1,100 more than what I had budgeted when I was thinking I could scrape up $1000 less than my friend's asking price.

Then when I went to get the money order, there was $100 MORE in my wallet than I knew was in there. I could not have counted $50 bills as twenties, could I?

I bought the car today.

Tonight, my ex husband gave me my child support check FIVE days EARLY. That NEVER happens!

Tonight, my ex husband told me that he knows how the economy is and that he and his wife have decided to let me claim my son on my tax return for 2010 (our custody agreement stipulates he gets to file the extra exemption).

TONIGHT - The Lord has reassured me that He uses all to His good, and that while he looks after the flowers and the birds; the war zones and the famished; he also cares about my peace of mind, vehicular safety, and general JOY. That my prayer was heard and answered regardless of the venue in which I prayed.

TONIGHT - THE LORD HAS SPOKEN.

Tonight - I am speechless.

Our Rhythm of Thankful Hearts

Today we celebrated our 1 year anniversary of existance.

We are The Way, and we gather in a small suite in a stripmall in Anderson, CA.

We have spent this year learning each other, learning our fair town, worshiping with our voices and hearts, and serving in every way that we can.

In honor of our one year anniversary (and Thanksgiving) we served dinner to each other and our community members before our evening service tonight. Later, during our service we discussed all the wonderful ways our Lord has blessed our lives through this year. It was so encouraging to learn how He has been working for and through us.

We are thankful for YOU, our reader, too. We welcome you to join us at our new time next week: Sunday, Dec 5, at 10am. We'll also be giving away a few Christmas trees which were donated by a local lot.

Also, this coming Friday (Dec 3) will be our LAST coffeehouse concert. There are three AMAZING musicians lined up.

Friday Night Update

The tide is turning and we are paddling along, catching the wave.

Our Friday night coffee shop will now be held only on the FIRST Friday of each month.

The other three Fridays we'll be heading out into the community of Anderson to show them God's love and compassion. The tide doesn't stand still, the waves don't wait for the shore to crash onto them, so we will be waves crashing into our beloved Anderson. If you would like to swim with us, come out this Friday night at 6:30pm and pray with us before we head out into the community.

Don't forget to update your calendars with our new info:

Friday evenings start at 7:00pm and end at 10:00pm the first Friday of each month. They’re the perfect way to either end your work day, or begin your night-out. We’re just hanging out, making new friends, drinking some coffee drinks, playing pool and listening to a different kick-back band every week. We’re not a club (unless you want us to make a secret handshake…). All ages are welcome!

Saturday evenings start at 7:00 and that’s officially our church service. We have some dynamic worship, Darby gives an inspiring sermon, and we gather into little living rooms on our comfy sofas to talk about the key concepts of tonight’s topic (currently, "Roots").

Last week I sat and watched Triniti and 30 other kids as they ran after the soccer ball, pushed and kicked each other, and listened to Darbys kind, firm and silly instruction. I met a sweet lady in her 60's who was there watching her grandson, age 6, whom she has full custody of along with his sister who is 3. She brought oranges every day for all the kids. For two days I listened to her story. She told me that she KNOWS God is real and that there is a place called heaven because she had been there. She drowned when she was 9 years old, and what she remembers vividly is the amazing place she went to..... where for a long time she sat petting a lion, and saw her great grandmother. Her life here was difficult at the time, she was being abused and so she didn't want to come back, and was angry at her brother for rescuing her.

She mentioned the challenges of raising the two kids, the little one wakes up every night with nightmares of abuse. The older one is angry, and doesn't understand why his mom left.

Her own son's kidney failed when he was 15. He had a transplant which saved his life and then it failed when he was 27 and he died.

Her daughter had a massive stroke, thats why she can't take care of her children.

Her other daughter had her third baby, a beautiful chubby boy with an angel face....he died at birth. She held him for hours.

She told me all these things as if she were talking about yesterdays weather. It was her normal, to her it wasn't shocking or even that interesting. But it changed me. I thought, goodness, why do I try to protect myself and my children? God gave us an amazing resilience. We can make it through just about anything.

Part of being sent is listening to peoples stories. Not talking, just listening. And caring about what they've been through and where they are. And sometimes, part of being sent is gaining a new perspective....about learning a little from those to whom you are sent.

We are the Way

A community engaging a way of life that reflects the love of God

This Saturday morning is our service day where we will engage the reflection of God's love to the Anderson/Cottonwood community.

We will be meeting at 8:30 a.m. at the same location you find us on Friday and Saturday evenings (2991 East Center St), and then we'll be heading out to our plot of land to till our share of the community garden. The produce generated here benefits the Anderson Cottonwood Christian Assistance (ACCA). The ACCA helps needy families in the area and acts as a food bank, job resource, and incorporates many local churches in the South County. Our turn to tend the garden is this Saturday!

If you have some spare time this Saturday morning and you love Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber as much as I do, then join us for some gardening. We need all the man-power we can get! Now, let's all get our hands dirty and grow some goods! People are hungry out there!!!!

No Friday Night Coffee

Hey Gang!

Have you sauntered out toward Anderson to see the carnival lights? Have you meandered while chowing down on corn dogs and cotton candy? Have you dizzied yourself from riding the Gravitron ONE TOO MANY TIMES?

But most importantly,

have you come by The Way's prayer tent located near the main gate?

Your friends at The Way are manning the tent around the clock (the fair's clock, thankfully!) to be here to cheer you up, support you, and help you talk to our Heavenly Father. We want to be able to sit with you and address your worries with the One who can lift them from your heart. Our shoulders are strong, and we'd like the opportunity to help lift you.

Please come by and say hello, just seeing your face is all we need to lift us!

Because we're so dedicated to serve the city of Anderson and all of Southern Shasta County, we've decided that rather than spreading ourselves extra thin in order to work at the coffee shop and also at the fair, we'll nix the Friday night coffee shop this week. That's right, I know you're disappointed, but just think of it as a short Friday-intermission. And hey, we'll still be there on Saturday at 7pm for our church services!

If you haven't been out to The Way for our Saturday evening church (7:00 pm), then this would be a good week to start. After a long, hot day at the fair, we're a short hop away on East Center Street. We have coffee, air conditioning, fans, and comfy couches (perfect for falling back onto and reclining). What's a better way to end a day at the fair but in the cool, dark, church singing worship music and participating in fellowship?

The Way is located at 2991 East Center St, Anderson, CA. Just down the road from Burrito Bandito.

The Way is going to be at the Shasta County Fair in Anderson this year!! We wanted to serve the community by opening up a place where anyone can receive prayer. There will be cold water, shade, and friendly faces to welcome all fair attendees into a conversation with the Lord. So stop by with your friends!!! You can find us at our prayer tent any time the Fair doors are open!

And...if you would like to serve by donation money or signing up for a slot to pray for others please don't be shy!!! We still have plenty of 2 hour slots open.

Hey Everybody!!!

Just a reminder-

there will be no Friday night coffeehouse this week (bummer, I know)

our regular Saturday service will be held at Anderson River Park
(this May the 8th)

Roots - week 2 - April 24, 2010

During this week's service, we were able to gather into our smaller "community groups" to discuss the important topic of what it is to walk in community on a grander scale. In this post, we'd like to share with you some of the scriptures we referenced in the sermon and which were also used to ignite conversation. As you can see, many of these reference following the Word through fellowship and community. This is done not only to personally go deeper into a knowledge base together, but also to spread the new covenant farther and wider.

We'd like to know what your thoughts are on this topic, please feel free to answer the questions at the end and leave us a comment. Enjoy!

Woah man! That was a good show at The Way last week, eh? The cars, the cruise, The Chalants… hot! How are we gonna top that this week?

What’s that you say?

It’s been a long, rainy week, and you just wanna sit back and unwind this Friday?

We hear ya.

Whatcha say we get together, lounge on a sofa, chat over a steaming cup o’ joe, and listen to the musical stylings of Jakob Martin. I know! I love his music too! Pure magic….

Hey gang!

It’s your friends at The Way, and we just want to thank you for being such devoted bloggers! We were just thinking about you, and would like to take our relationship to the next level. Maybe we can hang out a bit?

We’re so excited to be the new kids on the block down in Anderson!

Not to brag or anything… but we’re going to have the prime seat in town for the Hot-O-Rama cruise this Friday since they’re circling around and passing The Way with each loop. The cruise starts at 6:00, and they close the roads at 5:30, so get there early and sit with us! We’d also like to give you 50% off your coffee/espresso/Italian soda while you come chillax on one of our sofas and listen to the awesome band, The Chalants, during or after the cruise.

Another amazing service day with theWay!
There is just something about giving up your whole day to purposely serve others. It is amazing, and it is worship. And there is nothing better than worshiping the Lord! He is so worthy!

This Saturday we served a family and local church by helping setup and clean for a memorial service. This woman, whose life was being celebrated, was full of love and it could be easily seen by the faces of the ones she had spent her life loving.

After that we ate dinner together (home-made enchilladas, yum!) and got ready for a worship and communion service.

During the service we focused on Psalms 23 and sought after the Lord for what he wanted to speak to each of us personally from the passage.

Take some time this week to remember what He spoke to you, or to ask Him for the first time what He wants you to learn from this passage.

Psalms 23

"The Lord is my sheperd;
I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name's sake.

The Chalants

Here at theWay for their second visit, The Chalants were everything we expected and more. They graced our side stage with their whole band on Friday and filled our coffee house with amazing music. Their three way harmonys and emotion driven lyrics are definatly something you do not want to miss. A group of students from the area came and shared their lovely folk acoustic music. Drinking coffee and sitting back while jazz influences filled the air made the evening very relaxed.

Tonight, January 8, The Way was excited to be able to present Wood and Wire in a very enjoyable folky concert. Wood and Wire covered a number of well-known songs, from The Beatles to The White Stripes, and played some music on a Mandolin. The performance was groovy and upbeat with about 30 people in attendance. We hope to see these new friends again soon. Thank you so much to our wonderful performers and to everyone who was a part of a great night!

Christmas joy

Hi! Thanks for stopping by this space. We had the best time singing Christmas carols to the people living in the River Oak Rehabilitation home in Anderson the day after Christmas. We were a bit off key and a little unorganized, but the ladies who watched were full of laughter and happiness as they listened to us, and watched Triniti and Hope dancing (quite dramatically) to the music.

We have some great musicians lined up for this Friday and next.....Hope to see you there!

Today some of our team (and our kids) helped ACCA (Anderson/Cottonwood Christian Assistance) give out boxes of Thanksgiving foods at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Anderson. There were MANY different churches represented, really now, I mean lots. It was an honor to serve alongside them.

theWay Service Launch!!

Although it was a bit surreal, theWay's first church service was last night and it was such a blessing to be a part of it! We are all so excited to see this thing that God is doing in Anderson!

Breaking up into small groups to discuss the topic addressed by Darby was so impacting and exciting. He spoke about the early church described in the end of Acts as well as the passage in Luke where it describes the greatest commandment. Both passages have had a big influence on the vision behind the strategy of theWay so it was really good to be able to dig into and digest them together. Since there were about 40 people there, we broke into three semi-large groups. Each group was pretty diverse in age and background so the discussion was super interesting . It was so cool to hear all the different thoughts and stories. Every person in the group I was in had something different to add. I left feeling uplifted and challenged. Our conversations kept circling around the fact that in order to really love God and love others as the passage in Luke describes it will take the devotion that the early church had. We talked about how that devotion takes a lot of trust because it often calls us to a place where we have to depend on God to provide what we need. Talking about this with others and hearing their stories reminded me of what a trustworthy God we have. He will always pull through and always provide! So, being completely devoted to loving Him and loving others with everything we have is really such a joy and honor.
